Gale-force winds forecast and flood warning issued
The strong winds and heavy rain caused major disruption for households, with more than 100,000 losing power to their homes. Around 83,000 of those have since been reconnected, however conditions for engineers continue to be challenging.
Further disruption is expected as a further yellow warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office from 3am Tuesday 26 October until 9pm the same day, impacting large parts of the country.
As a result, and due to the likelihood of high tides and large waves, SEPA has issued an amber risk of flooding in the Western Isles, Caithness and Sutherland and the Northern Isles.
The SGoRR meeting was chaired by Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville and attended by Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth and Climate Action and Rural Affairs Secretary Gillian Martin. Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn also visited businesses and communities in Largs impacted by flooding.
Ms Somerville said:
“Over the weekend, we have seen a number of areas across Scotland experiencing severe impacts as a result of Storm Boelo, with flooding and electricity supply being cut off due to the heavy rain and high winds.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in the response so far, including the emergency services, those working to return electricity supply to homes, and the help that local communities have provided those affected.
“More high winds, rain and coastal flooding is forecast today and into tomorrow, and it is important to note that buildings and trees that were weakened over the weekend will be particularly vulnerable.
“I would urge the public to continue to check their local weather forecast and follow the advice of the Met Office, SEPA and the police to ensure they stay safe.”
