New Parent Club resources have been launched by the Scottish Government to help families and teachers support pupils who struggle with school attendance.
Parent Club’s guidance for parents and carers is designed to support open conversations about the underlying reasons for a child’s absences, with a view to helping them attend more regularly.
TV, radio, static and digital advertising will highlight these resources to parents, drawing on real-life examples.
Parent Club Scotland know that too many young people are missing school for reasons that can be difficult for them and their families. While the most recent figures show a slight decrease in absences, rates remain higher than they were before the pandemic. The underlying issues that drive poor attendance can be complex and unique. Young people may struggle due to anxiety, additional support needs, or reluctance to attend and this can leave parents and carers feeling frustrated and powerless.
There is no quick fix for improving school attendance. It’s a journey for parents, schools and pupils to take together, and the new resources on Parent Club can help them navigate that journey.
