ScotRail is advising customers to check their journey before they travel as more strong winds and heavy rain are set to sweep across the country.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across large parts of Scotland from 03:00 until 21:00 on Tuesday, 27 October, with wind gusts of 50-60mph widely forecast and potentially reaching more than 70mph in coastal and northern parts of Scotland.
With some heavy rainfall also expected, Network Rail has confirmed to keep customers and staff safe some routes will operate with speed restrictions on Tuesday.
These restrictions mean trains will operate at lower speeds than normal, resulting in longer journey times, delays, and possible cancellations.
Speed restrictions will be in place on the following routes:
- Glasgow Queen Street – Oban / Mallaig
- Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh
- Glasgow Queen Street / Edinburgh Waverley – Inverness
- Aberdeen – Inverness
- Glasgow Central – Largs
- Glasgow Queen Street – Helensburgh Central
- Ayr – Stranraer
- Inverness – Wick / Thurso
ScotRail is encouraging customers to check their journey before travelling and allow extra time.
Customers are asked to make sure they have the latest version of the ScotRail app from the Google Play and Apple App stores so they can check their journey on the app, website, and on ScotRail’s social media channels.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said:
“Safety is always our top priority, and with more strong winds and heavy rain across Scotland on Tuesday, we're asking customers to plan ahead and check their journey before travel.
“As a precautionary measure, some routes will have speed restrictions in place. These are essential to keep everyone safe but will mean some services may be delayed or altered at short notice.
“We'll be working closely with Network Rail throughout, and our teams will do everything possible to keep people moving where it's safe to do so.
“We'd encourage customers to make sure they have the latest version of the ScotRail app and check their journey before setting off.”
