Pupils at Glenrothes High School are enjoying a refurbished basketball court after a project led by local young people helped secure funding for the improvements.

The updated court was funded through the Glenrothes Area High Schools Participatory Budgeting Project, which gave young people from the area's three high schools the chance to identify local priorities and decide how funding should be spent.

Over a 12-month period, pupils worked with the local Community Learning and Development team to discuss the issues that mattered most to them and their communities. Better sports facilities and equipment emerged as one of the key priorities.

The basketball court at Glenrothes High School had been in poor condition and unused for several years. The revamped court has transformed the space, giving pupils a safe and attractive place to play sport, stay active and spend time with friends.

The project was supported through the Community Recovery Fund, with around £130,000 of the funding allocated to the high schools participatory budgeting programme.

Convener of the Glenrothes Area Committee, Councillor John Beare, said: "It's fantastic to see the refurbished basketball court open and being enjoyed by pupils.

"What makes this project particularly special is that it was shaped by young people. They identified the need for better sports facilities, put forward ideas and helped decide where funding should go.

"The updated court is a great example of what can be achieved when young people are given a real voice in decisions affecting their communities."

The basketball court is one of a number of projects funded through the participatory budgeting programme, which has supported ideas chosen by young people across the Glenrothes area. Other projects have included youth cafés, litter campaigns, new bins, community gardens and youth work activities, helping make schools and communities across Glenrothes better places to live, learn and spend time
