Gyms at Kirkcaldy and Leven Leisure Centres are to get major transformations this autumn.
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, which runs both venues, says the work will create a “premium environment” for customers, delivering high-spec fitness facilities to meet the needs of modern gym users. There will be new state-of-the-art equipment, lighting and flooring.
Work is expected to start in Kirkcaldy mid-October and at Leven at the end of October.
Both gyms will be closed for around three weeks while work takes place – although other facilities in both venues (including swimming pools and fitness studios) will be open as normal.
Members will also be able to use other gyms run by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust during closure periods.
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will be in touch with members directly with further information.
The charity said it would be sharing regular updates with customers through emails and information in venues, as well as through social media and its website www.fifeleisure.org.uk
Paul Burke, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s Commercial and Business Development Manager, said: “Over the last decade, the fitness industry has shifted significantly. Traditional gym layouts, dominated by rows of cardio machines and isolated resistance equipment, are being replaced by more flexible, strength-focused, performance-driven environments.
“Members now expect high-quality training spaces, integrated technology, great finishes, and a greater focus on wellbeing and community.
“Strength training is one of the fastest-growing areas of the global fitness market, and these new gyms have been designed to reflect that demand. Alongside premium Life Fitness cardio and conditioning areas, there will be a significant investment in both plate-loaded and pin-loaded Hammer Strength equipment, giving members access to the same high-performance training solutions used by professional athletes and elite sports programmes.
“We have also worked closely with our UK based partners Indigo Fitness to develop and manufacture bespoke strength and conditioning rigs and racks, designed specifically for each facility. This allows us to maximise every square metre of available space and create a more effective training environment than could be achieved with standard off-the-shelf equipment. The result will be versatile, high-quality gym spaces that support everyone from beginners through to experienced strength and conditioning users.”
The look and feel of both gyms will be similar to the high-specification facilities previously installed by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust at its centres at Michael Woods in Glenrothes and Cowdenbeath.

The refurbishment works in Kirkcaldy (due to start mid-October) will:
-
fully refurbish the gym space
-
install new Life Fitness and Hammer Strength gym equipment
-
create enhanced strength and functional training zones
-
install bespoke squat racks.
It is expected the new-look gym at Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre will launch around 7th November, 2026.
The gym upgrade in Leven is expected to get underway at the end of October. It will deliver:
-
a full gym refurbishment and reconfiguration
-
Leven’s first dedicated strength training zone, including Indigo Fitness squat racks
-
new Hammer Strength resistance machines, alongside Life Fitness cardio equipment, with interactive digital screens.
There will also be new flooring as well as enhanced LED lighting, mirrors and finishes in both facilities.
The revamped gym at Leven Leisure Centre is expected to be ready around 21st November, 2026.
Mr Burke said: “Originally developed within an old café space overlooking the pool, the gym at Leven has long faced space constraints and an irregular layout. This targeted investment redesigns the room from the ground up, moving away from an over-reliance on traditional cardio towards a modern, functional environment with a genuine strength training offer.”
He said the work would improve member experience, reduce maintenance issues and create a club that feels “contemporary and welcoming”.
Mr Burke said both revamps were made possible thanks to the ongoing support of gym members.
He said: “Fife Sports and Leisure Trust re-invests the income it receives from members back into the facilities we operate, helping to deliver improvements like this. We hope our users in Kirkcaldy and Leven enjoy using the new gym spaces when they are fully operational.
“Naturally, there will be a closure of the gyms for around three weeks in each case while work takes place. However, club members will be able to use other facilities as normal and also use any of our gyms nearby.”
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust hope the projects will improve member retention, support its vision for fitness in Fife, and improve its operational efficiency.
