Cat Trail Auction Set to Bring a Purr-fect Finale to Kirkcaldy

Wemyss Ware Cat Trail's 'The Big Auction' takes place this Saturday (3rd October)

The much-anticipated finale to the Wemyss Ware Cat Trail takes place this Saturday (2pm) at the Adam Smith Theatre , as the trail's unique cat sculptures go under the hammer in a charity auction expected to raise significant funds for the Kirkcaldy Project Fund

With online bids already submitted for many of the cats, organisers are hopeful that the auction will be one of the biggest highlights of the trail's successful run and generate a substantial boost for local community projects supported by The Kirkcaldy Lottery

The day will begin well before the auction itself, with family activities taking place from 10am at Every One Every Day in the Mercat Shopping Centre

Visitors will then have the opportunity to meet many of the artists behind the sculptures, who will be gathering alongside their feline creations in Kirkcaldy Town Square from 1pm.

In addition to the 17 decorated cats featured on the trail, bidders will also have the chance to secure several special auction lots. Among the most intriguing is the "Contingency Cat", a unique blank cat sculpture, alongside a one-off commemorative Wally Cat created exclusively for the event by renowned ceramic artist Susan McGill Designs

The special Wally Cat bears the inscription "The Wemyss Ware Cat Trail - Kirkcaldy 2026" and is believed to be the only cat sculpture Susan McGill has ever produced. While she is well known for creating Wally Dugs in her distinctive style, the cat was inspired by those much-loved canine pieces and has been made solely for this auction.

Ahead of Saturday's sale, residents have one final chance to see nearly the entire collection together. Sixteen of the sculptures, all except Sweetie, will be displayed together in Kirkcaldy Town Square from Wednesday. Then, between 5pm and 7pm on Friday, Sweetie will make a special appearance, allowing all 17 cats to be seen together in one place for the first and only time.

Tickets for the auction are selling quickly, and prospective bidders are encouraged to arrive early. Anyone wishing to bid will need to complete a bidder registration form and collect a paddle number, which must be used to signal successful bids to the auctioneer.
