The Commitments

The Commitments has been a West End Musical Hit. This is the story of soul music and how it became one of the “greatest genres” of music. As well as soul and Motown, we are enjoying Northern and Southern Soul, Funk, Philly Soul and Gospel.

Brian Gilligan who has the lead role as Deco tells us how Joey “the lips” asked him if he had thought about joining a band? Another prime member of the cast is Kevin Kennedy, who was known to most of the UK as “Curly” in Coronation Street

A band eventually forms, given a chance to perform in a local Bingo hall whilst the Bingo caller is off sick. We hear some classic songs including “Knock on Wood”, “What becomes of the Broken Hearted” and “Set Me Free”.

After forming the group of The Commitments, Dublin feels they are essential to the city and even though, a member of the band wishes to go solo to progress to the Eurovision Song Contest. Eventually the band are given a contract for the whole group. We see how both soul and Ireland have a massive connection.

The band work extremely well together and although a small story, it is definitely worth going along to see.
