The Bodyguard The Musical – review
The formidable task of following Whitney Houston in a roll must be daunting enough but to perform nightly on tour is a further challenge but one that Alexandra Burke was ready for. The X Factor winner from 2008 is now enjoying standing ovations night after night as Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard The Musical which opened at Edinburgh Playhouse this week. This spectacular show is peppered with hit songs like I’m Every Woman, Saving All My Love, The Greatest Love Of All, So Emotional and I Wanna Dance With Somebody but for me the pitch perfect electrics came from I Will Always Love You and One Moment In Time. Both big production numbers exquisitely performed
and worth the ticket price alone. That is not to say Melissa James (as her sister Nikki Marron) doesn’t have her vocal moments too and all complemented by dancers like a show within a show. There is drama and tension too as bodyguard Frank Farmer (played by Stuart Reid) continually is haunted by the stalker played by Mike Denman. Fife theatre fans may remember Stuart as the Genie in the Adam Smith Theatre production of Aladdin.
The Bodyguard The Musical runs at Edinburgh Playhouse until October 10
